A hilarious review of Barkley’s 1995 “Shut Up and Jam 2″ video game

August 31, 2010

Back in the early 90′s there were so many basketball video games to choose from: Double Dribble (click this link to play one of the sequels), Hoops, NBA Jam and plenty others, including the EA Sports assortment which turned into the NBA Live series. Now things seem limited — thankfully NBA Jam returns Oct. 5.

There was also a ridiculous game by the name of Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! The game was released on Super NES, Sega Genesis and even…wait for it…the Atari Jaguar. I remember the first time I played the game, it had a bunch of ridiculous characters and of course, Sir Charles Barkley himself. Yes, I chose to play as Barkley and within moments of playing the game I heard his voice say, “Go get the damn ball!”

I was shocked. One reason being, the video game was talking to me — almost non-existent back then. Another being, the game just swore at me. That was a big deal back in 1994.

The game was absurd and not that great, especially if you consider the fact that NBA Jam existed. Through some YouTubing, I found this excellent, outrageous, but actually pretty damn funny review of the game’s 1995 sequel — Shut Up and Jam 2. It starts out with a blank image for a minute and the reviewer coughing, but trust me, it gets better and he covers the game in all it’s glory.

Thankfully when I bought NBA Jam on Super NES, I got it the first day it came out, which meant that Barkley was in my game. He was taken out of later copies because of his exclusivity rights for Shut Up and Jam and it’s sequel.

WARNING: The review contains rated “R” language

Patrick Ewing and Webster were tight

August 27, 2010

Patrick Ewing is to knee pads, what former child actor Emmanuel Lewis is to cuteness.

Notice I say is, because even though you may think it sounds creepy, Lewis still looks like a cute kid at 39 years old.

Lewis played Webster on one of the greatest shows of the 80′s, Websterat the time of this picture, and I’m totally guessing, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lewis was about 13 years old.

Ewing played center on the second greatest team of 1994, the New York Knicks — this was before the knee pads thing though.

Props, The Hightop Fadeaway

Michael Jordan in NBA 2K11

Classic Video: MJ clowns Penny

July 19, 2010

While remembering great Penny Hardaway moments just seconds ago, I totally started thinking about the 1996 NBA All-Star Game. During the intros, Michael Jordan figured he’d show his jokester side to the world by tearing the pants off of a then 24 year-old Hardaway.

A hilarious moment that I thought was the funniest thing in the world back when I was 12.

I had that warmup suit (I got it for my 12th birthday), it’s the best NBA warmup suit ever. It was a little too tight on me at this point in my life, so I sold it on eBay last summer. Now that I think of it, that was not worth the mere $50 I got for it.

Shaq/Pepsi ad from 1993

June 10, 2010

I want to say that this commercial was on a movie tape of some sorts, maybe Home Alone 2? I can’t remember to be honest with you, but for some reason, I think it was. Remember how on tapes they used to have previews and ads before hand? I guess DVD’s do the same, but I think it’s easier to skip through now.

Regardless I don’t even know if “movie tape” is the correct term, and this commercial might not even be on one, I just might be a little crazy, so don’t even pay attention to me.

This ad is from 1993, and it features a young Shaquille O’Neal, wearing his Reebok Shaq Attack I shoe in the black colorway, I had those — in a boy’s size 5 1/2. Now, I need them in a 13. Anyways, this commercial is a classic for Shaq fans. If you don’t remember it, then you haven’t been down with Diesel from the beginning.

UPDATE: Come to thinking of it, it may have been on the tape to either “The Sandlot” or “Rookie of the Year.” I’m almost sure of it!

Vintage NBA.com commercial with Penny Hardaway and others

June 5, 2010

The first thing you might notice when watching this NBA.com commercial is how cheesy the internet looks. The page looks awful. Terrible and boring, with gawdy fonts. Well, that part comes a little later so maybe the first thing you’ll notice is Penny Hardaway or Mitch Richmond. If not, maybe you’ll finally pick up on things when you spot Sam Mitchell in his T-Wolves gear, or Antoine Walker rocking the Celtics’ green.

What a fantastic time this was.

This is before my family had the internet, so back then I used to go to other people’s houses and beg for them to let me go on NBA.com (shouts out to Jeff Long), or I’d even ask the library at school if I could stay after and use the internet to go on NBA.com. Then my mom would pick me up at around 3:00 p.m. It was awesome and it probably explains why I sucked with girls in high school.

Back in the day, them good ol’ days.

Now all we do is sit online, tweet and stalk girls’ Facebook pages.

Jordan picked as 2K11 cover athlete

June 3, 2010

When NBA 2k11 drops this coming October, we won’t see LeBron James, Dwight Howard or Kevin Durant grace the cover for their first time. Instead, the clocks will turn back and Michael Jordan will be the cover athlete of the popular basketball game franchise.

2k Sports made the official announcement Wednesday and also added that Jordan will be part of the game development — probably assisting in the motion capturing process.

Since Jordan is gracing the cover, I hope this means that 2K Sports will do more than just add him to their All-Decade Teams. Could this finally be the year that an NBA game will add the great teams of the past, like Madden has? I’m talking 1977 Blazers, the ’80 Lakers, the ’89 Pistons, the ’93 Suns, the ’94 Rockets, ’95 Magic and many more. I want to play a Heat/Knicks series in HD on XBox 360.

I know it may be a long shot, but if they’re going to put the effort of putting a player from the past on the cover, then they should try to give the hardcore fans like me something more than just being able to play with Michael Jordan, even if licensing is a pain.

Please 2K, make it happen.

Make this not just be because even though the league has a bevy of talented stars –they still rely on Jordan more than any of those players, because he’s more marketable at age 47 than any player currently playing.

Some great Ken Griffey Jr. videos

June 2, 2010

I couldn’t forget to post these two great videos of Ken Griffey Jr., especially considering the fact that both relate to this blog.

First, we must take a look at this awesome ad from 1996, starring Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Nick Anderson and of course, Lil’ Penny. The two are sitting on the couch, watching an ad promoting Griffey for president in 1996 (an amazing campaign by Nike). By the end of the ad, Anderson disappears, just like he did in the 1995 (I’m kidding, I had too! I’ve got nothing but love for Nick Anderson).

Of course, it wouldn’t be complete unless I posted his appearance on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” So click the jump, to see that footage and watch Will get dogged by “The Dynamite Kid.”

Larry Bird vs. Michael Jordan for Big Macs

April 26, 2010

Here’s a classic McDonald’s commercial with two of the greatest players of all-time, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. This one should bring back some memories, nothing like playing H.O.R.S.E. in the front yard for a Big Mac. Story of my life.

On one other note, Jordan needs a damn stylist!
