2k10 Fresh Awards: Whoops

April 27, 2010

Dudes, I worked like three 12-hour days in a row last week, so I jacked it up — plus — I went to Chicago over the weekend and my fingers were shaking too much every morning while there — which meant I couldn’t type.

I missed  a couple during that time, the NBA was like fire handing these awards out. If you ask me, they were much faster than usual. I blame the internet and the mass amount of media in this day and age.

So as of now, they’ve beat me to Most Improved, Coach of the Year and also Sixth-Man.

I’m still giving you my take.

Mike Woodson shaved his eyebrows

January 26, 2010

The Atlanta Hawks hadn’t won a game in Houston in over a decade, 1999 to be exact. Last night, all of that changed as the Hawks beat the Rockets, 102-95. As big of a win as it was for the much improved Hawks, it wasn’t the big story coming out of Houston.

Hawks head coach Mike Woodson, for some reason or another, has shaved his eyebrows. It was bad enough that he shaved his head awhile back, but the eyebrows just take it to another level. The best part about all of it is, he won’t discuss why he did it and he also wore fake eyebrows that Josh Smith made for him before the game (who said that Smith/Woodson had beef?)

For more on this incredible story, check out Lang Whitaker’s article over at Slam.

T-Mac didn’t play much in his return

December 16, 2009

Tracy McGrady made his season debut in Tuesday night’s 107-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons. In a very limited eight minutes of action, McGrady went 1-for-2 from the field, missed two free-throws and finished with three points and three rebounds.

With the Rockets playing at a surprising level in the Western Conference, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with McGrady. Rumors of trade have swirled the past week, and it seems as if the Rockets were very reluctant to get him back on the court, especially with the success of Trevor Ariza, Aaron Brooks and their surprising winning ways.

I most definitely thought the Rockets would have one of the league’s worst records this year. Turns out, I was wrong, way wrong. They look like a playoff team, the only question is will T-Mac be on the team by then or have any significant role?

“Who throws a shoe, honestly?”

November 16, 2009

The infamous question once asked by Austin Powers has finally been answered, and the answer is none other than Ron Artest.

Artest, who is a regular topic on this blog, decided it would be strategic to throw Trevor Ariza‘s shoe off the court when it came off his foot during Sunday’s Lakers-Rockets game. Ariza looks in shock that Artest would do something so ridiculous and absurd (his reaction at the 0:42 mark is hilarious), but it’s Artest for crying out loud, on top of that it was a pretty savvy move.

Contrary to this posting I do not condone throwing shoes, especially Air Jordans, that would be awful. Honor thy kicks.

Tracy McGrady plans to return Nov. 18

November 9, 2009

It didn’t sound like Tracy McGrady was going to play again until sometime in early 2010, but Yahoo! Sports is reporting the seven time All-Star will make his return to the court next week against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

A few years back, McGrady was one of the best players of this generation, but injuries have derailed his career over the past few seasons. He only played in 35 games last season, 66 in 2007-08 and 47 in 2005-06. Last season, McGrady posted only 15.6 points per game, far below his career 22.1 per game average, but he was obviously playing injured.

After more than eight months of rehab, will we finally see shades of the McGrady of old? We’ve seen players like Antonio McDyess and Grant Hill bounce back after serious injuries, doing so well into their 30′s. I’m not sure if we’ll see the same player who once score 13 points in 33 seconds (like you’ll see in the video below), but the big question that remains is if T-Mac can stay on the court and contribute to the Rockets, who are off to a surprising 4-2 start.

McGrady worked out with Tim Grover all summer. The same Grover who helped Dwayne Wade bounce back last season, along with Gilbert Arenas this season, in addition to many other clients that include Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

Western Conference Season Preview: ’2k10 Fresh’ Edition

October 28, 2009

Yesterday I went over the much-improved Eastern Conference, and today I’m going to hit you all with my Western Conference preview.

Ron Artest is in Hollywood, San Antonio is healthy and has added a bunch of new talent and Allen Iverson has agreed to come off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies. The plot thickens out West, but one thing remains, Kobe Bryant is the league’s best player and is chasing after his fifth championship ring.

How will the West play out? I know the answers to all of this, so read the review already.

Everyone gets new jerseys in ’09-10

September 24, 2009

It was pretty cool at first, the whole ‘new uniforms for the 2009-10 NBA season’ thing. The Sixers announced they’d have a new logo and uniforms for the upcoming season, then Portland showed off their retro-inspired alternates, then the Mavericks pulled out a new alternate jersey, but now it’s just getting ridiculous.

The Houston Rockets are the latest team to get a new jersey for the upcoming NBA season. Wednesday night the Rockets unveiled their new alternate road uniform, which was inspired by the jerseys the team wore during their back-to-back championship run in 1994 and 1995.

Look at the font and of course the coloring scheme (granted it is the old school Rockets colors), the jersey is clearly Chinese inspired, clearly narrowing in on their target market. Since the economy is down, teams are just pumping out new ways to get your money. With Yao Ming down all season, the Rockets need to do anything they can to generate interest. These new duds should sell very well, especially internationally with their huge Chinese fan base.

It’s official, Yao out for 2009-10 season.

July 17, 2009
Yao Ming is going to look like this all of next season.

Unfortunately for Rockets fans, and all of China, Yao Ming is going to be looking similar to this for the 2009-10 NBA season.

After the news broke a few weeks ago, it was pretty apparent that Yao Ming would miss the 2009-10 NBA season, now it’s official.

Yao will have surgery on his broken left foot next week and will miss the entire upcoming season. He is not scheduled to return to action until October of 2010.

Yao’s injury is a huge blow to the Rockets, who after years of failure to get past the first round, finally jumped that hurdle last season.

With Yao out for the season, Ron Artest moving on to the Lakers and the nagging injury that is known as Tracy McGrady, last season was about as fun as things are going to be for Rockets fans for awhile.

Artest going to Hollywood for peanuts.

Ron Artest's past will not go away until the Lakers repeat in 2010, but will they?

Ron Artest's past will not go away until the Lakers repeat in 2010, but will they?

If you haven’t visited this blog, then you probably don’t know that I like Ron Artest as a player, and I also think he’s hilarious as a person.

Artest is awesome, in many ways. A lot of people hate the guy, but they shouldn’t. He’s been on good behavior for years now, and he’s committed to winning. Any team would be lucky to have him, except the Pacers of 2005.
