Video Heaven: Rodman interviews and The Admiral crashes

August 27, 2010

I’m making this post about me. Why? Because two of my favorite players ever are in this clip, and I was not expecting this when I began to watch it.

Two weeks back Dennis Rodman was interviewed at the Hall of Fame Ceremony by CBS 3 in Springfield. I will watch anything with Rodman, he’s an icon and the greatest defender of all-time. Rodman is always entertaining, and most importantly, the guy was a great teammate. This year Rodman showed up to support his former teammate Scottie Pippen and last year he came through for both Michael Jordan and David Robinson.

This interview went from great to legendary when Robinson crashes and the two begin to reminisce on their relationship and time together in San Antonio. I honestly almost began to breathe heavy, that’s how excited I was. My two favorite players ever (along with Ben Wallace) in one interview, unexpectedly.

Seriously, the only way this interview could be better is if Wallace, Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Hulk Hogan and Kanye West showed up — seriously.

2k10 First Round Predictions: Western Conference

April 18, 2010

By now you hopefully have read my analysis of what I think will come of the first-round in the Eastern Conference, which seems like it will be some pretty dull and lackluster matchups. I don’t see any series really going to the limit or even making us question the higher seed. as we did last year with the amazing Chicago-Boston series. In the West however, excitement looms.

The West typically over the last few years has always given us a better first round, just because the middle of the bunch, hell even the top portion, are incredibly close. Just looking at the standings you’ll see that only seven games separates the No. 1 seed Lakers from their No. 8 seed opponent Oklahoma City. The first round out West has the potential to be great, so here’s a look at the matchups.

Nets beat Spurts, avoid history books

March 30, 2010

It’s been hard enough for the New Jersey Nets to win three of their last 20 games, let alone three of four, but somehow, someway, they did it.

With the season ticking down and a record that nobody wants on the line, the Nets found a way to win some games and avoid having the worst record in NBA history. Big wins against the Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons last week helped secure the Nets, at worst, a tie with the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who finished 9-73.

After Saturday night’s 106-83 loss to the Chicago Bulls, the Nets had to win one of their last nine games to leave the 76ers all alone as the worst NBA team of all-time.

Shockingly enough, the Nets were able to win for the third time in four games Monday night against the San Antonio Spurs of all teams. The Nets outscored the Spurs 28-18 in the fourth quarter to beat the Spurs 90-84 behind 22 points (10 in the fourth) and 12 rebounds from Brook Lopez.

With the loss, the Spurs now drop to eighth in the West. As for the Nets, they avoid a role in history that they seemed destined for a few weeks back.

It has been an ugly season for the Nets, but Lopez has become one of the best centers in the game and Devin Harris has already been an All-Star.  As the season comes to an end, rookie Terrence Williams has put together a very solid March averaging nearly 14 points, five assists and seven rebounds per game. The team is bad, very bad, but they have a solid, young core to build off of.

Jay-Z or not, this team will more than likely not even compete for LeBron James this summer, but the future is bright, especially if the ping pong balls go their way.

Don’t worry Nets’ fans, as bad as things have been, there’s been worse in Jersey over the last year.

Where Camera Phones Happen

February 9, 2010

Over the years, changes in technology have really changed the landscape of the NBA. From getting a box score and up to the minute news, moving all the way forward to the Twitter era — where so many of the league’s players give peaks into their everyday normal lives, along with communicating with fans and giving away tickets.

Granted the camera phone has been around for about seven years now, it’s really had quite the impact on the league this season.

Just a few weeks ago, news broke that nude photos of Blazers’ center Greg Oden were making their way around the net. It was awkward news, and it was apparent that Oden was pretty embarrassed by the whole situation.

Unfortunately, it’s not over.

Spurs guard George Hill is now the latest victim of past camera phone mistakes.

In a statement issued by the team Tuesday, Hill said: “A year ago I made a mistake and take full responsibility for my actions. I have matured and learned from this episode.”

These two young players, obviously have some learning to do. If you want a girl to send you nude pics, and you’re in the NBA, you’re probably not going to have to return the favor via MMS. If a regular guy can get away with it, an NBA player should have no problem with this.

Luckily, a veteran like Juwan Howard is smart enough to know he shouldn’t be pulling a Vanessa Hudgens — at least I hope so.

If you want to see the pics, Google them, cause you won’t find them here. Sorry ladies.

Greg Oden, meet Richard Jefferson

November 9, 2009

Not much to say here, but WOW! Richard Jefferson can still get up and Greg Oden might make an appearance on Jefferson’s first poster as a member of the Spurs.

Props, Dime Magazine

Manu Ginobili kills a bat as if it’s a fly

November 2, 2009

So far in my 26 years on this planet, I’ve only killed a fly with my bar hands once, back in 2000. That shouldn’t take away from my ninja or stealth skills, but it’s only happened one glorious time. It’s difficult to do, but Manu Ginobili apparently has stepped it up to a new level.

A bat was in the arena during Saturday’s game against the Kings in San Antonio, the bat was halting the game and Ginobili had enough.

The man killed the bat, I don’t know if that was fair. Maybe the bat shouldn’t have been near the court, but did it deserve to die? Of all the days to kill a bat, Ginobili does it on Halloween?

What a cold, cold man.

Thanks, NickMicko

2k10 Fresh: Who Will Win It All?

October 29, 2009

The odds in Las Vegas are in the Lakers favor to repeat as NBA Champions in 2010. What’s not to love? The Lakers bring back everyone and swap out Trevor Ariza for the more talented Ron Artest. Kobe Bryant doesn’t want to stop winning, and you could see that in his face Tuesday night when he got his ring. Yes, Bryant was happy, but he wants more, he’s far from content with four championship rings and that’s why Bryant is so great.

If the Lakers are in fact going to win the title, they’re going to have to beat some really great teams, I don’t think it’s going to be easy and that’s why I don’t think the Lakers will repeat as NBA Champions. If you want know who will win the NBA title in 2010, then you better read the predictions after the jump.

Sorry Pau, but you will not be getting your second ring next summer.

Western Conference Season Preview: ’2k10 Fresh’ Edition

October 28, 2009

Yesterday I went over the much-improved Eastern Conference, and today I’m going to hit you all with my Western Conference preview.

Ron Artest is in Hollywood, San Antonio is healthy and has added a bunch of new talent and Allen Iverson has agreed to come off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies. The plot thickens out West, but one thing remains, Kobe Bryant is the league’s best player and is chasing after his fifth championship ring.

How will the West play out? I know the answers to all of this, so read the review already.

David Robinson: The one and only

September 23, 2009

I wrote the following column a week after Robinson’s enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, but I delayed a bit in posting it. I couldn’t let this moment pass completely without me writing up a straight-from-the-heart tribute to my favorite athlete of all-time.

RobinsonHallSpeech

I remember hanging around the Armada Flea Market with a cousin of mine when I opened, well to my memory, one of my first packs of basketball cards.

My mom gave me some money and I walked around and picked up some packs of NBA Hoops from one of the vendors. My mother was also a vendor that day, my parents used to sell antiques at those shows during the early 90’s.

The packs were the 1990-91 series and my older cousin was looking through the cards I had and telling me which ones were good, since I had no idea. He came across a David Robinson card and told me that was a good one. We then got a Beckett Price Guide, and I found out the card was worth a dollar.

When he told me the card was worth a dollar, I wanted to walk back over to the vendor and give him the card for another pack, or at least get some candy with it.  I didn’t understand my cards were not a valid form of currency.

That was the moment that I deemed Robinson my favorite player, and from then on it stuck.
